Online Learning

The online Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood & Family Studies is a great option for those working full time and those who live outside the Seattle area. The program is offered completely online, giving you the flexibility to do your coursework largely on your own schedule and at your own location.

How Online Learning Works

screenshot of class interfaceFrom your computer, you’ll connect to an online learning management system called Canvas. This web-based software allows you to access course materials and interact with faculty and fellow classmates in online forums at any time.

As with a classroom course, you start and finish each online course with the rest of your cohort. All students have the same deadlines, and you will need to keep up with all lectures, readings and assignments.

Technology Requirements

  • Computer able to run a recent version of a major web browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari
  • Reliable high-speed internet connection (broadband recommended)
  • Webcam and microphone (recommended)

In addition, you may need access to one or more of the following tools and technologies for some courses: video editing software, Microsoft PowerPoint, Flash, Adobe Acrobat, Visio, Windows Media Player or QuickTime. If a course relies on software that is beyond the basic technology requirements, it will be indicated in the course introduction.

The use of a webcam and microphone is recommended, but not required. These tools will allow you to visually communicate with instructors and advisers during office hours and other times.

Video Technology Requirements

ECFS requires the use of a video camera and related accessories to complete assignments. The Introduction to Online Learning course will help you learn how to use the video technology tools.

We recommend purchasing the video camera and accessories listed below. These items have been tested for quality, and our Technology Support Team will be able to fully support you in the use of these items. Alternatively, you may use your own video camera, smartphone or tablet to capture video for the program.

If you choose to use your own technology, please make sure the video and audio quality is high enough so that instructors and peers can see and hear all your important interactions. You will also need to use a tripod (see recommendations below) to ensure steady video. Technology support for items other than those listed here will be limited.
